Renteria Singles In 10th, Reds Win.
Draft Update.
Josh Osich Pitches No-Hitter As Beavers Drop UCLA.
Raiders Draft Chimdi Chekwa in 4th Round.
This pick is in part for depth, but also a bit of insurance in case Nnadmi Asomugha decides to take his services elsewhere. The all-pro cornerback was declared a free agent after failing to meet some basic performance incentives because nobody threw his way all season long. According to Mocking the Draft:
Strengths: Is fine when he’s playing off man coverage and has an extra step to turn and run with receivers. Reads the ball pretty well in the to cut and break quickly. Is naturally long and knows how to use his length to his advantage. Likes to quickly jump in front of the receiver and bat the ball away. Has very good timed speed (4.38 seconds at the Combine), but doesn’t always play up to it. Has lined up on both sides of the field and in the nickel. Played gunner on special teams.
Weaknesses: Chekwa really struggled when Ohio State tried to use him in press coverage. He doesn’t have the body control or fluidity to turn and run with his receiver. Poor on his transitions. Was consistently beaten on the outside. Needs to get stronger or he’ll really get pushed around a lot in the NFL. Is a drag down tackler who will have trouble against power possession receivers. Lack of body control allows quick ball carriers to beat him in the open field.
Raiders Draft Dyke and Barksdale.

Played every snap in nine games - North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M ... Only senior on the starting offensive line.
DeMarcus Van Dyke, CAREER: A two-sport athlete at Miami, playing both football and running track ... Played in 50 games from 2007-2010 ... Started 21 contests ... Tallied 80 tackles, including three for loss ... Recorded 10 pass break-ups...Had three interceptions during his career.

#3 Beaver Baseball Beats #24 UCLA.
Raiders Draft Stefen Wisniewski.
Mike Riley Leads The Uphill Fight For Oregon State.
Wide receiver Jordan Bishop tore a ligament in his ankle playing basketball in January. Quarterback Ryan Katz missed all live work during spring practice as he recuperated from wrist surgery. H-back Joe Halahuni, who actually made it to spring ball, injured his left shoulder and may not be ready until mid-September.
Just to top it off, it's been a cold, wet, miserable April. Spring practice, which concludes Saturday, can't conclude fast enough.
Of course, when you're Riley, every down is third-and-long. Oregon State is a little guy in a conference that keeps getting bigger. Disadvantage is as commonplace as raingear around here.
Oregon State football is the guy who lives down the street from the guy who won the lottery. Oregon used to be a regular Joe, too. The two schools used to never stray too far from one another in the basement of the league.
The University of Oregon, just a half-hour or so from Corvallis, has become the heartthrob of college football. America can't wait to see what it wears every Saturday, much less how it plays. The Ducks have benefited from the largesse of former Ducks track athlete Phil Knight, who has lavished his swooshed millions on his alma mater.
Take last summer, when the Pac-10 season preview for the media concluded after a dinner in Los Angeles. Riley booked a commercial flight for the following morning.
"Why don't you just come back with me in the private plane?" Oregon coach Chip Kelly said.
As he told the story, Riley's lean, angular face broke into a grin.
"The people who unloaded the stuff at the Eugene airport did a double take when I got off the plane after Chip," Riley said. "It was kind of funny. I like him. He's a good guy."
Riley doesn't lay awake at night, wondering why Knight couldn't have run for the Beavers.
"Thirty miles' difference," Riley said. "And back in those days, we had pretty good track, too. In the [era] Phil was competing, we had Dick Fosbury."
Oregon got the gazillionaire. Oregon State got the inventor of the Fosbury Flop.
Riley calls himself "a silver-lining guy." The only proven playmaker who has made it with all body parts intact to the spring game is wide receive Markus Wheaton. Riley's take: "The backups have gotten a lot of good work. They're better players for it."
George Schroeder, a columnist for the Eugene Register-Guard, refers to Corvallis as Mayberry and Riley as Sheriff Taylor, which is just about perfect. Riley grew up in Corvallis, "a five-minute town."
"I know this place," Riley said. "I love it and I can recruit to it with a passion."

Trail Blazers-Mavericks Game 6 NBA Playoffs Preview.
Portland has become adept at surpassing expectations.
But the ultimate test of the team's resolve will come Thursday night, when the Trail Blazers face elimination trailing 3-2 in their first-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks.
"When you get in these loser-out games, sometimes everybody tries to do it all, and then you get out of character," guard Brandon Roy said on Wednesday. "So the biggest thing tomorrow is that we stay in character and don't panic if they get up two points or we're up two. We need to play within our game plan like we've done all season, and we can beat this team."
Perhaps nothing demonstrates the Blazers' ability to deal with adversity more than their last win in the series. Down 67-44 in the third quarter, Roy led his team on a stunning comeback for an 84-82 Game 4 victory on Saturday.
Roy, a three-time All-Star who had been troubled by his knees all season and came on as a reserve, finished with 24 points -- 18 in the fourth quarter.
For Roy, there was satisfaction in the performance given what he had gone through.
In early December, it became apparent that something was amiss for Roy, the face of the franchise. It was later learned that the cartilage in both of his knees was so depleted that he was nearly playing bone-on-bone.
While the condition is something that will likely dog him for the rest of his career, Roy opted to have arthroscopic surgery on both knees in January. All told, he missed 35 regular-season games.
When Roy returned from surgery, LaMarcus Aldridge had taken over as the team's top playmaker, and second-year guard Wesley Matthews had taken his spot in the starting rotation. Roy's minutes were tightly controlled off the bench.
As they had with other key injuries -- most notably to centers Greg Oden and Marcus Camby -- the Blazers picked themselves up and moved on. They made the necessarily adjustments, and helped themselves by adding forward Gerald Wallace from Charlotte at the trade deadline, to wind up the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

#3 Beaver Baseball Roll Past Portland.
The win pushed the Beavers to a 30-8 record, putting them at the 30-win plateau for the second consecutive season and 11th time in head coach Pat Casey's 17 seasons in Corvallis. OSU also extended its win streak over the Pilots to 11 games.
"Credit James and Ben; they threw very well today," Casey said. "James set the tone early and Ben carried it throughout the end of the game. Offensively, we did what we needed to do to get the win."
Neither team was able to do much through three innings, but the Beavers broke the scoreless stalemate with four runs on six singles in top half of the top half of the fourth. Danny Hayes, Kavin Keyes, Parker Berberet and Ryan Dunn all drove in runs with singles off Portland starter Owen Jones.
Those four runs were all Nygren needed as the right-hander worked 5 1/3 innings to improve to 7-1, tying Sam Gaviglio for the team lead in wins. The senior tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and scattered just three hits while walking none.
Wetzler came in and worked the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out five while allowing an unearned run for his first career save. He struck out five and allowed two hits.
Jones took the loss for Portland after allowing all four runs in the fourth. The right-hander dropped to 3-5 this season after walking two and striking out seven.
The Beavers added two runs in the eighth on a Jared Norris double and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Keyes to conclude the win.
Norris led the Beavers with two hits. He also walked twice.
Kramer Scott tallied two of Portland's five hits. Colin Feldtman, who pinch hit in the ninth, singled home the Pilots' lone run.
The third-ranked Beavers now set their sights on No. 24 UCLA this weekend as the clubs open a three-game series in Los Angeles Friday night starting at 6 p.m. PT.

Reds Knock Off Brewers In Game 1 Of 3 Game Series.
Trail Blazers-Mavericks Game 5 NBA Playoffs Preview.
The former MVP signed up for four more years because he wanted to turn around that reputation.
Just a week into the playoffs, the Mavs are in jeopardy of adding to it.
Dallas went to Portland with the chance to pull off a sweep, but returned home licking its wounds following one of the most humiliating losses of the NBA's shot-clock era. The Mavericks spit up a 23-point lead with 13 minutes left to lose Game 4 and knot the series at 2-2.
Game 5 is in Dallas on Monday night. A return trip to Portland is already set for Game 6 on Thursday night.
"Frustration is definitely at a high level," Nowitzki said. "There is a huge difference from being up 3-1 and 2-2. This is definitely up there with the most frustrating losses.
Up 2-0 for the first time since that infamous series, the Mavericks were halfway to only their second series win since then. They had the chance to sweep the Trail Blazers, or to return home with a chance to knock 'em out. By losing both games, this title-starved collection of veterans in their 30s guaranteed themselves at least two more games in a series that keeps getting more physical, plus another round-trip flight to the Pacific Northwest.
And, of course, the immediate concern is getting over what Jason Kidd called "one of the toughest losses I've ever been involved in."
"But we can still win the series, and that's where our focus has to be," Kidd said. "We have to stay together and get home and come out Monday with the same focus and intensity as we did today. Then we just have to finish."
The Mavs flew home after Game 4 on Saturday. They didn't practice Sunday.
The biggest thing going for them is that Game 5 is in Dallas, and so would a Game 7. The home team has won all four games this series -- just like the home team won all four games during the regular-season series.
"Game 5 is the pivotal game," Blazers forward Gerald Wallace said. "The advantage is tilted their way because they're at home. But we've got the momentum on the court."
Portland's momentum includes a rejuvenated Brandon Roy.
Roy left Dallas wondering about his career and his role on the Blazers. He hardly played in Game 2 and didn't score. He was so low in the rotation that he said he was nearly in tears on the bench. He picked things up in Game 3, then was the star of Game 4, scoring 18 points in the series-shifting fourth quarter, including the winning basket in the final minute.
"He helped us in Game 3, and people doubted if he could do it again," Portland center Marcus Camby said. "He proved a lot of people wrong. He's got a lot of game left."
Maybe there's a lesson there for Dallas.
Roy said he regained his confidence and his shooting touch with the support of friends and family. He won the fans back with a few more jumpers. If the Mavericks can get the same kind of backing, maybe they can turn things back in their favor.
After all, they did dominate the first three quarters of Game 4. It's just the last one they need to clean up.
"We just have to stay positive," Nowitzki said. "Two out of three we're at home, where our crowd has really carried us, especially in the fourth quarter in the two wins that we got. This is going to sting; this is going to hurt, but we worked hard all through the regular season to get those two at home."

Scott Rolen Headed To The DL.
Infielder Chris Valaika was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to replace Rolen on the 25-man roster.
In 2005 while with the Cardinals, Rolen missed most of the season with a torn left labrum in the same shoulder, which took two surgeries to repair.
Adding to the Reds' issues were that Rolen's backup, Juan Francisco, went on the 15-day DL Monday because of strained calf. Enter Valaika, who can play three infield positions but has the least amount of experience at third base. Valaika, who played 11 games this season at second base for Louisville, played two games at third base, and also played some there for the Reds at Spring Training.
Valaika was batting .306 with one homer and six RBIs for Louisville.

Amazing Comeback By The Blazers Ties The Playoff Series.
Reds Even Out Series With Cardinals.
Trail Blazers-Mavericks Game 4 NBA Playoffs Preview.
The Blazers need to improve aspects of their defense, despite the 97-92 victory in Game 3. And they're still lacking production from the bench, even though Brandon Roy's 16 points were somewhat a breakthrough.
"We can be better," coach Nate McMillan said Friday. "And we're going to need to be better."
Wesley Matthews led the Blazers with 25 points in Portland's victory Thursday night, which drew the Blazers within 2-1 into best-of-7 series.
The result was true to the regular-season series, when each team won twice on their home court. The Blazers will host the Mavericks in Game 4 on Saturday afternoon.
Besides Matthews, LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 points in the victory. Dependable veteran guard Andre Miller had 16 -- as did Roy, who had scored just one field goal in the previous two playoff games.
Roy had groused in frustration after going scoreless in Game 2. His comments touched off controversy in Portland, where fans seemed divided in their support.
The three-time All-Star had arthroscopic surgery on both his knees in January and has struggled with his role off the bench.
But spurred by the presence of his family, and supportive text messages -- even one from Charles Barkley -- Roy played with abandon in Game 3.
Now the trick for him is to do it again.
"Last night I went out there and just played and had fun," Roy said. "And that's what I'm going to have to do on Saturday."
Overall, the Mavericks' bench outscored the Blazer's bench by 109-56 through the first three games.
The Blazers had trouble stopping Jason Terry, who came off the bench and had 29 points and seven assists. The game before that it was Peja Stojakovic who gave the Blazers fits, and the game before that, there was Jason Kidd. Those three have had the bulk of scoring to complement Dirk Nowitzki.
"We'd like to get a few more guys involved and able to score a few more points. But if you're not going to have a balanced game, you need to have a couple of guys who go for big numbers," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "There's no set formula for us. We don't say Dirk's gotta be the first guy and Jet (Terry) is going to be the second and (Shawn) Marion's the third work that way for us."
The Mavericks opened this year's playoffs with an 89-81 victory. Kidd had 24 points, including a playoff career-best six 3-pointers. Nowitzki had 28 points -- 18 in the fourth quarter alone -- and 10 rebounds.
In a 101-89 Game 2 victory, Stojakovic tied his career playoff best with five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points, while Kidd pitched in 18. Nowitzki, showing more resolve than in the opener, finished with 33.
"It usually comes down to X-factors and who makes shots," said Nowitzki, who had 25 points and nine rebounds in Game 3. "In the playoffs you have to attack from everywhere, and you have to make shots and make enough plays from all over the place. Whoever is in has to be in that attack mode to really help the team win."
Nowtizki said the Mavericks also need to correct minor things that stood out in Game 3 -- Dallas had 13 turnovers and made just 13 of 23 free-throw attempts. But he liked how his team was able to hang with the Blazers in front of the their hometown crowd.
"We feel like we took their best blow and we're still right there," he said. "We have another opportunity on Saturday, and obviously we don't want to go home with a tied series."
Portland has won 11 of its last 10 at the Rose Garden. Overall against Dallas, the Blazers have a 47-18 advantage at home in the regular season, and they're 7-1 in playoff games.
