Scott Rolen Headed To The DL.

By HD.

The Reds on Sunday placed third baseman Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.

Infielder Chris Valaika was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to replace Rolen on the 25-man roster.

In 2005 while with the Cardinals, Rolen missed most of the season with a torn left labrum in the same shoulder, which took two surgeries to repair.

Adding to the Reds' issues were that Rolen's backup, Juan Francisco, went on the 15-day DL Monday because of strained calf. Enter Valaika, who can play three infield positions but has the least amount of experience at third base. Valaika, who played 11 games this season at second base for Louisville, played two games at third base, and also played some there for the Reds at Spring Training.

Valaika was batting .306 with one homer and six RBIs for Louisville.

Reds Even Out Series With Cardinals.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds were looking to even the series with the Cardinals. They did, winning 5-3. Here's what happened.....

Cincinnati's Miguel Cairo has played for nine clubs in his 15-year career so the veteran knows what to look for when he's down in the count.

Cairo hit a two-out, two-run, go-ahead single in the eighth inning to lift the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Former Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin gave up a single to left field by Cairo, who fell behind 0-2 in the count.

"I was just trying to stay back and see what was coming," said Cairo, who turns 37 on May 5. "He left it out over the plate and I was just lucky enough to get a hit."

Cincinnati gave Cairo a two-year deal but Reds manager Dusty Baker acknowledged some doubts about the veteran during spring training.

"He looked old in spring training. I mean, there's a difference between being old and looking old," Baker said. "We made a decision really thanks to Scott Rolen. He suggested he'd be a big help to us. When you're on the fence, it helps to have somebody who knows somebody. You trust their word."

The slumping Reds had lost seven of nine before snapping St. Louis' three-game winning streak.

Reds-Pirates Preview.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds will face the Pittsburgh Pirates starting tonight, so we have a series preview of the Reds first 4 game series of the year.

GAME 1 FRI 4:10 PT: Bronson Arroyo has had great success vs. the Pirates in his career, hopefully, he can keep going and bump to 3-0, but the Reds face Pirates ace who the Reds can never beat, Charlie Morton, who is 1-0 this season with a 2.08 ERA. The Reds bats will have their hands full vs. Morton. MY PREDICTION: Reds get by with this one, Arroyo spectacular, 5-2.

GAME 2 SAT 10:10 AM PT: Edison Volquez has had sluggish starts to this 2010 season, but this one will be his easiest. Volquez is 2-0 but with a 5.82 ERA. The Reds will face James Mcdonald who is 0-0 with a 5.56 ERA. MY PREDICTION: Reds win again, 6-3.

GAME 3 SUN 10:10 AM PT: Mike Leake had a bad start vs. the D-backs, and this game will be different. Leake is 1-0 with an ERA of 6.75. The Reds will face Jeff Karstens. MY PREDICTION: The Reds lineups on Sundays are pretty much never good, so I say the Reds bats go cold, Reds lose, 2-1.

GAME 4 MON 4:10 PT: Sam LeCure had a great outing vs. the Padres, but the Bullpen blew it for him, and because of that, he is 0-0 this season. He will face Kevin Correia. MY PREDICTION: Joey Votto and Scott Rolen have a great game, and the Reds blank the Pirates, 8-0.

So thats the Preview!

Arroyo Pitches a Gem Against The D-Backs

Bronson Arroyo allowed one run -- unearned because of his own throwing error -- in six innings, Jonny Gomes doubled in two runs in the ninth and the Cincinnati Reds overcame a strong pitching performance by Daniel Hudson to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 on Saturday night.
Arroyo (2-0) scattered eight hits as the Diamondbacks failed to convert two scoring threats in the first four innings, then Arizona reliever Juan Gutierrez's throwing error cleared the way for the Reds' four-run ninth.
Hudson (0-2) gave up two runs on three hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking three. After scoring twice in the first inning, the Reds had only two baserunners in the next six against the 24-year-old right-hander, and neither got past first base.
Scott Rolen had an RBI single and Jay Bruce brought in the second run with a sacrifice fly for the Reds in the first.
Arizona cut it to 2-1 in the sixth when Chris Young singled, advanced from first to third on Arroyo's throwing error, then scored on Melvin Mora's two-out single.
After Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman hit 103 mph on the Chase Field radar gun while throwing a scoreless eighth, the Diamondbacks fell apart in the ninth.
Gutierrez walked the leadoff batter, Joey Votto, and then tried to barehand Rolen's grounder. He knocked the ball down, grabbed it, then threw it away to first. Instead of what could have been a double play had the ball made it past the pitcher to an infielder, runners were at second and third with no outs.
Gomes doubled off the glove of Mora at third to bring both runners home.
Hudson struck out Drew Stubbs to start the game, then Brandon Phillips singled and Votto walked. Rolen followed with a single for his ninth RBI of the season, then Gomes walked to load the bases with one out.

Reds Handed First Loss Of The 2011 Season.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds were looking to sweep the Astros today going into a tough 3 game series with Arizona. Well, they didn't, losing 3-2 today. Here's what happened......

The Astros score early in the first off Young pitcher, Sam LeCure, who didn't hurt us, he pitched pretty much a solid game with just 5 innings pitched, gave up 3 hits and struck out 6.

The Reds tied the game at 1 when Edgar Renteria double to center to score Jonny Gomes.

The Astros retaked the lead in the 4th on a RBI Groundout, but the Reds veteran 3rd baseman, Scott Rolen, captilized and drilled a solo shot into left field and the game was now a Nail-bitter, 2-2.

But, the Astros got a run in the 9th, with a double by Matt Downs to score Brett Wallace.

The Reds will suffer this one and lose their first game of the year, now 5-1. The Reds will start a new series tomorrow vs. The Arizona Diamondbacks. Game time is set for 6:40 PT. Travis Wood (1-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Ian Kennedy (0-0, 4.50 ERA). Here's some highlights....

Reds Destroy The Astros, Go To 5-0.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds were looking to go 5-0 today and clinch the series vs. The Astros. The Reds came back to win, 12-4. Here's what happened......

The Astros led 4-0, all 4 runs were off Edinson Volquez who pitched over 45 pitches that inning, but after that, the Reds would just dominate.

The Reds got one run in the 2nd to cut the Astros lead to 3 with a Paul Janish single to plate Jay Bruce.

Reds had a 5 run 3rd inning, starting off with a Scott Rolen Double to score Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto. Chris Heisey would then get on base on an error on a terrible throw by pitcher Nelson Figueroa scoring Scott Rolen.

Another run scored again on a bad throw by the Astros Catcher Towels to third base and Jay Bruce ran home to score and the Reds now led the game 5-4. The Reds capped a 5 run inning with a Paul Janish RBI Single to score Heisey.

The Reds scored 4 runs in the 6th, starting with a Drew Stubbs single to score Janish. Then, Brandon Phillips had a RBI Single to score Miguel Cairo. Joey Votto then hit just short of a home run to bounce off the wall, but then into the stands for a ground-rule double scroing Speedy Stubbs.

The Reds added one more in the 6th, with a RBI Fielder choice by Rolen to score Phillips.

The Reds got another 2 runs in the 8th starting with a Edgar Renteria RBI Single and ending with a Error by the Astros SS to score Joey Votto.

So, thats it. The Reds win 12-4. Tomorrow, will be an early game at 9:35 AM PT Brett Myers for the Stros and Sam LeCure for the Reds.

Reds Win With 19 Hits, Sweep The Brewers.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds were not picked to win the NL Central this year by a lot of people. But, today, the Reds proved them wrong.

The Reds won today, 12-3, completing a 3 game sweep to open up the 2011 Regular Season. The Reds today had 12 runs on 19 hits. Here's what happened.....

Bronson Arroyo was on the hill, he pitched well, even know he has been dealing with mono. Arroyo went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits and struck out 5. He also never allowed a walk.

In the 1st however, Arroyo allowed a lead-off homer to Rickie Weeks. But as you know, you never give up on the Cincinnati Redlegs.

In the 2nd, Jonny Gomes had a solo homer to tie the game at 1. In the same inning, Paul Janish would single to score Jay Bruce, and just like that, the Reds took their first lead, 2-1.

It wouldn't be long until the Brewers tied it again, with a double by Rickie Weeks to score starting pitcher Randy Wolf. Now, it was tied again, 2-2.

The Reds would explode in the 4th though, Drew Stubbs reached on a infield single, scoring Ryan Hanigan, Hanigan had a heck of a day today, more of him coming up. In the same inning, Brandon Phillips hit a 3 run jack and the Reds after 4 would lead 6-2.

After some dominate pitching by Bronson Arroyo in the top of the 5th, in the bottom of the 5th, Ryan Hanigan would homer and the Reds now led 7-2.

Ryan Braun would homer in the 6th, but Scott Rolen would hit a sac fly also in the 6th to score Phillips and the Reds led 8-3.

In the 6th again, Hanigan would homer again, his 2nd of the day, he also had his first ever four hit day, it was a 3 run jack scoring Joey Votto and Jonny Gomes. 11-3 Reds.

The Reds would score one last time with a Miguel Cairo single and that would do it as the Reds win it, 12-3.

The Reds don't play until Tuesday, vs. The Houston Astros. Mike Leake will be pitching for Cincy and J.J. Happ will be going for the 'Stros. Game time is set for 4:10 PT. The Reds are 3-0! GO REDS!!!!

Wood Shines, Reds win, 4-2.

By HD.

The Cincinnati Reds were looking to go 2-0 since 2005 today. But one guy would have to help them do that. That would be Travis Wood. The Reds and Wood won, 4-2. Here's what happened......

Travis Wood, (as I said in Paragraph 1), was on the hill today. He went 7 innings, gave up 4 hits and struck out 7. He went to 1-0, the only Reds started yet to get a win.

So let's start in the first when Drew Stubbs lead off on a walk, stole a base, but then tried to steal 3rd but was caught stealing and was tagged ou at 3rd. Brandon Phillips then stuck out swinging.

But, the 2010 NL MVP singled up the middle for veteran 3rd baseman Scott Rolen, who would then hit a 2 run jack into left field and the Reds lead it 2-0.

The Next inning, Ryan Hanigan would get to 2nd on a Sac Bunt by Travis Wood, next batter was Drew Stubbs who would Triple and another run would score for the Reds, as they now led 3-0.

Joey Votto would come up to the plate in the same inning, and would look like a easy ground out, Rickie Weeks fiddled with the ball and had a bad throw to first scoring Stubbs and Votto safe at 1st base. 4-0 Reds.

But, that would be all the runs scored for the Queen City Kings. The Brewers got 2 runs of their own with a Solo home run by Almonte and then in the 9th on a RBI single by Casey McGehee to score Ryan Braun.

The Reds are now leading a top of the NL Central by their selves. The Reds will face Randy Wolf tomorrow, and Bronson Arroyo will pitch for the Reds. Game time is set for 10:10 AM PT.
