Beaver Baseball Team gets opening day win.

By Hunter Hendrickson

You all probley think I just follow Reds baseball, (which is my Favorite team), but I follow the Oregon state Beavers baseball also. And yesterday, they got a huge opening day win over Gonzaga. Here's what happened.....

Sam Gaviglio started opening day for the beavers, struck out five over 6 2/3 innings, but not did not get the decision when Gonzaga tied the game at three on a passed ball in the eighth inning. The righty threw 92 pitches, 66 of which went for strikes, and his only free pass of the game came against his last batter when he hit Eric Lane with a pitch.

That wasent the hero of the day, however Tyler Smith was. Hitting a 3-2 pitch from Gonzaga reliever Mark Phillips and lined it right in front of Tyler Chism in left, bringing in Brian Stamps for his third run of the game and the Beavers’ first victory of the 2011 season.

Sam Gaviglio allowed runners to reach second and third in the first inning; he did not allow a runner to get past second the rest of the game.

He was relieved by left-hander Matt Boyd in the seventh, nearly two full innings after the Beavers took their 3-2 lead. Garrett Nash singled to start the inning, and moved to second when Stamps singled on a bunt. The two moved up a base after Susac posted a sacrifice bunt, and Nash scored to make it a 2-2 game when Parker Berberet flew out to left on a sac fly.

Bell, the next batter, got the count to 1-1 before he singled hard through the left side, driving in Stamps and giving the Beavers their first lead of the season.

Susac drove in the Beavers’ first run of the season in the third. He lined a sharp two-strike single through the left side off Gonzaga starter Ryan Carpenter, getting Stamps in from second.

So the Beavers win their 2011 Opening game.GO BEAVS!
